Tendon Ginza Itsuki ~ Affordable Tempura Don that’s worth the wait

So it was Christmas Eve and I decided to take my good ol’ mother out for her favorite tempura.

As far as I knew Regent Hotel served up one of the more well-known tempuras in Singapore but my thrifty mother certainly wasn’t going to spend that kind of money on a meal like that.

So I found this nice little place, Tendon Ginza Itsuki, located in Tanjong Pagar, next to the popular cake shop Cake Spade. Reviews online were generally positive and the price was decent so we decided to give it a go.

The place was already packed when I reached there around 550pm, a testament to the popularity of the joint. It took a 15 minute wait before we were allocated a seat inside.

The menu itself is pretty simplistic, which is fine by me since too many options can be bewildering at times. You can a choice of only 2 dishes, the Special Tempura Set ($13.90) or the Vegetable Tempura Set ($12.90). The Special set consisted of 2 sea prawns, 2 chicken fillets, and 4 pieces of vegetable. Both sets came with a decent Chawanmushi and miso soup, and you can help yourself to the unlimited side dish of vegetable appetizer while you wait.

The tempura itself was coated with a sweet sauce that gave the extra flavor, though it may be one of the reasons why the tempura didn’t have the expected crisp. To some, it may feel a tad soggy but it certainly didn’t bother me too much. The prawns were fresh and the chicken fillets didn’t feel too dry even though they used breast meat. The vegetables were really fresh as well.

The meal cost us around $32 in total for two, without any drinks. The green tea itself was a rather princely $3.80, and from what I know with no refills, so do take note. Service charge and GST is added onto the bill at the end.

As a whole, I think it’s a good spot to have your tempura fix, if you aren’t the kind that is particularly anal about the crispiness of the tempura. With the generous portion, I think it’s likely to attract those who would like a good tempura meal but not pay excessive prices. If you can do without drinks the prices should be able to meet the expectations of the budget conscious.

I would certainly come here again, and oh, be warned that you will smell from the enclosed environment.
