Talad Rot Fai Ratchada

On our latest trip to Bangkok, we decided to make exploration of night markets a prerogative, having read some really good reviews online.

The original Talad Rot Fai market was so successful that it spawned another version nearer to the city centre. That was the one with visited first, known as Talad Rot Fai Ratchada, located conveniently near Thailand Cultural Centre MRT, and right behind Esplanade Mall.

Right at the entrance you see several watering holes to hang out with friends, listen to live music, or catch a football game.

Food was obviously the main reason why we came and we are excited to try as much as we possibly could. Little tip: order in single portions to try so that you can sample more items!

The market’s layout was simple and straightforward – about 4 rows of food with the other 8 selling clothes, shoes, accessories, and other items. This made navigation a bliss, compared to Chatuchak which even Theseus would have a problem getting out from!

You can expect the typical street food stalls, like meat skewers, tom yum goong, noodle soup plus other creative concoctions aimed at the younger group. We had this massive watermelon smoothie and while I enjoyed the creativity, it wasn’t exactly thrilling to be lugging around a 2 kg watermelon while avoiding contact with people in a crowded night spot.

While there were a decent array of food, the variety was limited by having too many stalls selling the same items. This was about the only minor complaint we had with the night market.

One of the best things about Talad Rod Fai Ratchada, besides its location, was that it wasn’t as touristy (but maybe soon). As such the prices, especially for clothes, were cheaper compared to places like Platinum Mall.

Pari had a field day in this market, snaring up several pieces at good prices! We actually felt there were better deals here and ladies would no doubt be able to pick up several bargains.

This was a place which we’ll certainly come back again when we are back in Bangkok. Hopefully, it will retain its casual vibe with affordable prices, even when the tourists start to flock in!
